Periodontics
Non surgical periodontal treatment
The treatment of periodontal disease will frequently begin with an etiological therapy: strengthening of hygiene techniques and scaling and root planing of the complete mouth.
In general after this treatment and effective oral hygiene, there is already a marked improvement in the state of the gum which deflates, firms and attaches to the teeth, which induces a reduction in the depth of the periodontal pockets.
- Reinforcement of personalized plaque control
The objective of the oral hygiene treatment phase is to reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth and therefore reduce the level of inflammation.
Your periodontist will first explain the causes of your periodontitis and explain exactly how to keep your teeth and gums clean. You will receive personalized advice on the best way to use the different cleaning products; for example, the most appropriate tooth brushing technique and the correct use of dental floss and interdental brushes.
- Scaling and root planing of the entire mouth
All bacterial deposits, calculus, will be removed from the teeth and their roots thanks to ultrasound and small manual instruments slid under your gums. Then the dental surfaces are polished. Overflowing dental care and dentures will be eliminated to make your teeth easier to clean.
- Antibiotic treatment
In some cases, with or without microbiological evaluation, antibiotics are prescribed to treat infections of active or persistent gums. In no case is it prescribed alone, it must always be in combination with non-surgical treatment.
- Microbial test
In certain particular cases, different complementary analyzes can be proposed to you, in order to make a precise diagnosis and evaluate your response to the treatments.
- Revaluation
After 6 to 8 weeks, your periodontist will do a complete gum assessment to check the progress of your treatment. A special instrument called a periodontal probe is used to record the depth of the periodontal pockets and to check for bleeding gums. If periodontal pockets are still present, other treatment options may be suggested, such as corrective surgical therapy.
Once the disease has been treated, the implementation of periodontal support therapy, or maintenance, is essential to maintain periodontal health. These sessions make it possible to control possible recurrences of pocket formation and to intercept them. They allow a reinforcement of hygiene techniques and a complete cleaning in order to reduce the quantity of plaque and deposit difficult to access for the patient. These sessions are generally scheduled every 3 to 4 months.
Periodontal disease can be treated well. The key to success is to follow the treatment offered by your periodontist and eliminate the bacterial plaque that triggers the disease process by having excellent oral hygiene.
